Francis RENAUD (1887-1973) - Lot 255
Francis RENAUD (1887-1973) Pain Rare print in glossy black glazed stoneware Manufacture HB Quimper, circa 1930. Titled and signed "RENAUD" on the terrace, on the reverse "HB QUIMPER RENAUD" and numbered "11/40". Height 40 cm Width 35.5 cm Depth 36 cm Francis Renaud, a sculptor from Brioche, studied first at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, then at the ENSBA in Paris. This reduction of "Douleur", an emblematic sculpture by the artist whose original model, carved in Kersanton granite and installed at the foot of Tréguier cathedral, was awarded the bronze medal at the 1921 Salon des artistes français. The powerful emotion that emanates from this sculpture resonates like a universal message, particularly audible in our time: the true face of war is not that of the combatant who goes to the front, sword in hand... but that of the unfathomable sadness of the woman who mourns him, that face is that of "Sorrow".
