Model schooner with topsail made of wood and bone for almost - Lot 79
Model schooner with topsail made of wood and bone for almost all deck fittings. A very fine realisation made in the 1930s by Commander CHAPELET who, out of passion and to occupy his time ashore, like many sailors, made models of the ships on which he had sailed. The model is presented dry of canvas. The hull is made of pine, most certainly Oregon pine, varnished for the dead works and painted, golden color, for the live works. The transom is embellished with a bone cartouche which is itself engraved with the first names (Marguerite and Madeleine) of the two daughters of Commander Chapelet. The offering of this model to his daughters allows us to understand the great care taken in the realization of this model and the great and harmonious beauty that results from it. The ropes, which had suffered because of their age, were recently changed, as was the display case, by a very experienced professional modeler. Perfect condition. Dimensions of the model: Length 91 cm, height 67 cm. Showcase dimensions: 100.5 x 34.5 x 76 cm. Note 1: CHAPELET Mathurin François Marie was born on February 1, 1883 in Binic, Côtes d'Armor. He was successively lieutenant, skipper then fishing captain in Iceland on several Binicaise schooners from 1910 to 1926, then captain on steamers in Monaco from 1928 to 1934. Note 2: 13 photos are available on the Rennes Enchères website, including the photo, taken in the 1950s, of the model at Mathurin CHAPELET.
