Scrimshaw. Whaler's spin. Steel for the instrument itself, w - Lot 91
Scrimshaw. Whaler's spin. Steel for the instrument itself, whalebone for the handle. First half of the 19th century. Length 40 cm, handle width 15.6 cm. Note 1: This auger was used to make holes in cetaceans' flippers so that slings could be passed through them in order to drag or stow the animal in pairs. Note 2: An extremely rare instrument, so much so that at one time, when it was no longer of any use, and had never had any decorative function, it was greatly abandoned and destroyed.
