Diderot Denis - D'Alembert Jean le Rond - Lot 119
Diderot Denis - D'Alembert Jean le Rond Encyclopedia or reasoned dictionary of sciences, arts and crafts, by a society of literary people. Geneva chez Pellet, 1777/1781. 45 volumes in-4°, contemporary full calf binding, spine ribbed with gilt fleurons, red morocco titlepapers, green for the tomaison, red edges. Some defects of use, at the jaws, corners or caps, but very few on the whole series. 36 volumes of text, 3 volumes of plates plus 6 volumes of tables of contents. Portrait of d'Alembert in the frontispiece of volume 1, that of Diderot in volume 2. The 3 volumes of plates have been collated and contain 454 sheets of plates, some plates have 1, 2 or 3 plates per sheet, bringing the number of plates to more than 500. Collated on the board tables and the set is complete. The 42 volumes of text have not been collated but checked; no anomalies to report. Freckles on all volumes, including those of plates. On some volumes, presence of the ex-libris of Yves Claude Jourdain (1749 in Brest-1828 in Rennes), president of the court in Rennes. Beautiful series, rarely complete, even more rarely with the table volumes in a homogeneous binding; all the irons are identical, no piece of title or tomaison are missing. Sold as is.
