Turgot Michel-Etienne - Bretez Louis - Lot 130
Turgot Michel-Etienne - Bretez Louis
Plan of Paris started in 1734, completed in 1739. Paris, 1739. 1 volume in-plano (56 x 45 cm), contemporary full calf binding, spine ribbed and decorated with fleur-de-lys, red morocco title-piece, plates with gilt garland in frame, gilt irons with the arms of the city of Paris in the center of the plates. The binding is in poor condition, many defects including a detached first cover, damaged skin, corners and caps, lack of leather on the nerves and in some places on the bits. Collated and complete of the 21 black plates of the arrondissements of Paris. All the plates are mitered. Or a plan for the assembly of the 20 other plates. Old restoration in margin, on the back of the plates with period paper. Important moulding on plate 10 and small angular moulding on plate 11. Handled copy, margins a bit dirty. List of restored plates: First plan, then plates 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14, 18, 19. The margins of the most restored plates are 1 and 18 and 19. Probably the most beautiful map of Paris having been designed to be assembled to make a huge map of 3.20 m x 2.50 m. The work was done by Louis Bretez who for two years criss-crossed Paris to lift the plans. Complete set, very nice inking and beautiful contrast for the set of plates.
