Attributed to Karel DUJARDIN (Amsterdam 1626 - Venice, 1678) - Lot 163
Attributed to Karel DUJARDIN (Amsterdam 1626 - Venice, 1678) Riders and shepherds in the Roman countryside Oil on canvas 56 x 75 cm A genre painter specializing in landscape painting, Karel Dujardin joined the Bamboccianti group, established in Rome since 1625. Originally from Amsterdam, where he studied under Nicolaes Berchem and Paulus Potter, he made two trips to Italy which greatly inspired him. Our painting is an excellent example of his work, featuring a rider and shepherds chatting near a tree: a gentle pastoral landscape at sunset imbued with a dreamy feel. This Roman country scene can be compared with the artist's work in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (inv. 965). M.O.
