Farinaux-Le Sidaner, Le Sidaner, catalog raisonné, l'oeuvre peint et gravé, 1989, described and reproduced under n°833, p.351 (Le presbytère, dated by mistake around 1894) PROVENANCE Louis Le Sidaner (the painter's eldest son), Paris Private collection, Paris EXHIBITIONS Henri Le Sidaner and Brittany, Musée de Pont-Aven, June 29-September 30, 2002 Henri Le Sidaner, Interior Landscapes of an Impressionist (Le Sidaner Retrospective 2013-2014), Baron-Martin Museum, Gray, June-October 2014 Though born in a remote South Sea island, Le Sidaner was an authentic Breton, descended from a line of ocean-going captains from the island of Brehat and Saint-Malo. This old house was painted in the fall of 1913, during the first of the artist's five study trips to Brittany. Le Sidaner stopped to work that year in Dinan, Pontrieux, Tréguier, Landerneau and Pont-Aven (his next four trips, between 1918 and 1923, took him mainly to Quimperlé and Le Croisic). An agnostic who was highly sensitive to the piety of his fellow human beings, the artist brought back from his stay in Tréguier studies for five motifs: the cathedral of Saint-Tugdual, its small cloister and the surrounding secular houses. Perhaps this was his way of paying homage to the liberal faith of Renan, whose home was Tréguier. The old house reproduces the entrance of a 15th century building, rue Colvestre, where Jean V, Duke of Brittany, lived. The description of the windows of the past was one of the main themes of Le Sidaner's work. Few painters have attempted this with such happiness. To the pleasure of decorating his facades, was mixed the taste of the discreet evocation of a home. Old house resounds above all like a tribute to the Brittany of his ancestors.
