Henri MARTIN, 1860-1943 - Lot 24
Henri MARTIN, 1860-1943 Saint-Cirq Lapopie, the Carol Square oil on canvas, signed lower right 100 x 77 cm. ATTENTION: PRIOR REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO BID ON THIS LOT A notice of inclusion in the Henri Martin archives established by Mrs Marie-Anne Destrebecq Martin will be given to the buyer. In 1912, Henri Martin bought a house in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a medieval village located on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Lot, in the Parc Naturel Régional des Causses et du Quercy. This purchase follows the acquisition of Marquayrol in Labastide-du-Vert in 1900 and before that of his house in Collioure in 1923. Three residences that inspired him so much! In Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, time has stopped. This site, now listed, has attracted artists since the beginning of the 20th century. Its fortified church, its sloping roofs made of brown and flat Burgundy tiles and its picturesque streets could not but inspire the artist, who represented them on many occasions. In spite of the roughness of the architecture, a certain softness and serenity emanates from this work taken from the Carol square under a deep blue sky. The painter has placed himself several times below, setting off to attack the heights of Saint-Cirq, which seem inaccessible, so much so that the upward movement of the houses and the church seems continuous. Sabine Maggiani, catalog of the exhibition "Henri Martin, du rêve au quotidien". The magic of Saint-Cirq lay in the product of the rarest balance in the most perfect unevenness of the plans. In 1951, André Breton acquired the oldest building in the town, the former inn of the bargemen, which was also the home of the painter Henri Martin.
