Marx Karl - The capital. Paris, publisher Maurice Lachâtre, - Lot 102
Marx Karl - The capital. Paris, publisher Maurice Lachâtre, S.D. (1872-1875). 1 volume large in-8° period binding, half dark green basane, marbled paper boards, spine ribbed with gilt author, title and fleurons. Binding consistently restored, at corners along the spines and at the foot; spines still a bit fragile. Scattered foxing, more pronounced on a few sections. Roy's translation was entirely revised by the author. It appeared in installments between August 1872 and May 1875. First French edition, complete with the editor's reply to Marx's letter, printed on the back of the facsimile, which will be deleted in subsequent editions. The revisions and additions made by Karl Marx during the course of publication made this French edition an original work in its own right. The author went so far as to state in the notice to the reader dated April 28, 1875, that the edition "has a scientific value independent of the original and should be consulted even by readers familiar with the German language. The edition, printed on two columns, contains two titles, each illustrated with a large woodcut, several vignettes and headers, a portrait of Karl Marx and a facsimile of a letter from Marx to the publisher Maurice Lachâtre. Uncommon and still sought after.
