Berre Henri - El Hadj Mustapha Ould Bakhit, Sultan of Dar Si - Lot 203
Berre Henri - El Hadj Mustapha Ould Bakhit, Sultan of Dar Silva. S.E., Goz-Beida, 1946. 1 volume large in-4°, period binding, North African work, with cold stamped brown leather, decoration on goat skin on the first cover. Interesting typescript on fine paper, 108 pages plus 2 handwritten maps at the beginning of the work. Some poor repairs inside with scotch tape. Letter from the author to his brother on the first blank page dated May 17, 1948. Henri Berre served more than ten years in Chad, between 1942 and 1962. His first post, where he remained for five years, was that of Goz Beida, capital of Dar Sila. The work therefore bears the imprint of this first field. It was in Goz Beida, in 1946, that the author composed the first version of his study. He put this text back to work at the end of his life, after a busy administrative career. The book was published in 1985 by the C.N.R.S. It is a small book about a little-known country, on the borders of Chad and the Republic of Sudan. At its largest, Dar Sila is a square of less than 200 km on each side. It is a mountainous region, with abundant vegetation, which served as a refuge zone throughout the 19th century, out of reach of the two powers: Ouaddaï (in Chad) and Darfur (in Sudan). Rare.
