CHINA, Canton - QIANLONG period (1736-1795) - Lot 47
CHINA, Canton - QIANLONG period (1736-1795) Cylindrical vase in copper and painted enamels decorated in two poly-lobed cartouches with foliage in the rocaille style of two woodcutters cutting wood in the center and surrounded by peonies, pears and butterflies. The background is decorated with peonies in their foliage on a salmon background. Two handles in the form of stylized dragons. On the reverse side, the Qianlong mark with six characters in zhuanshu in blue (Accidents). H. 33 cm This vase was damaged during the bombing of Brest in 1944. Reference: Similar objects in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, n°000570N This type of vase was produced in the quality workshops in Canton that produced tributary objects for the Qianlong court in the 18th century. The quality of the decoration on these objects suggests that the Canton craftsmen were trained by the Jesuit missionaries who introduced copper enameling to China. A similar vase in the British Museum, London, illustrated by S. Jenyns and W. Watson, Chinese Art II, Rizzoli, New York, 1980, p. 162, pl. 113 (fig. 1). A similar vase sold at Sothebys London, November 7, 2012, lot 113; another December 3, 2008 at Christie's Hong Kong, lot 2520.
