Jeanne MALIVEL (1895-1926) - Lot 42
Jeanne MALIVEL (1895-1926) Octagonal plate with geometric decoration Polychrome glazed earthenware Manufacture Henriot Quimper, circa 1925 Signed on the reverse with the monogram "J.M" in a cartouche and "HenRiot Quimper 131". Small chips and enamel chips on the rim. Length: 25 cm These plates, which feature a star-shaped design on a background of stanniferous enamel in reserve of the marly, required a specific mold for their octagonal shape, the shape of the basin corresponding to that of the rim, the marly being cut out of the enamel. The marly is cut into triangles or wolf's teeth, alternating between solid yellow and hatched aubergine-colored lines. Two triangles meet in the center to form a square. These very rare plates represent, through the pertinence of the relationship between form and decoration, a work thought out in its entirety, "designed" in other words, and a real break with Henriot's previous productions: this radical approach once again symbolizes the Seiz Breur aesthetic advocated by Jeanne Malivel. Provenance: former René-Yves Creston collection. A similar plate is in the Musée Breton, Quimper. A similar plate was presented in the exhibition Les Flammes. L'âge de la céramique at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris in 2021, curated by Anne Dressen. Bibliography: - Daniel Le Couédic and Jean-Yves Veillard (dir.), Ar Seiz Breur 1923-1947, la création bretonne entre tradition et modernité , ed. Terre de Brume - musée de Bretagne, 2000. A similar plate is reproduced on page 66. - Olivier Levasseur "Jeanne Malivel, une artiste engagée", ed. Locus Solus, 2023. A similar plate reproduced on page 139. Note from the Scientific Committee: It is interesting to note the originality of the shape, which is only found in Henriot's Jeanne models. I've never come across this shape with other decors.
