René-Yves CRESTON (1898-1964) - Lot 57
René-Yves CRESTON (1898-1964) The Normandie on her slipway Gouache on paper mounted on cardboard. Saint-Nazaire, Penhoët shipyard, 1932 Dedicated "to Mr. P... with my grateful sympathy", "signed "RY Creston" and dated "(19)32" lower right. Minor foxing. A preparatory drawing of our gouache is reproduced on page 52. This gouache is one of a series of works Creston produced "underwater" at the Normandie shipyard from 1931 to 1934. This low-angle composition underlines the formidable power emanating from the bow of the "monster", its hull supported by immense logs, the "accores", which were removed one by one before its launch on October 29, 1932.
