René-Yves CRESTON (1898-1964) - Lot 60
René-Yves CRESTON (1898-1964) Large globe Polychrome glazed earthenware enhanced with gold Manufacture Henriot Quimper, 1931 Minor wear and hair in the glaze around the poles Diam. 42 cm x Height 40 cm From the artist's family. Note from the Scientific Committee: Several concordant testimonies, which I collected in the past, lead me to believe that the 1937 globe was broken during its cartage to the Château de Coat-an-Noz where it was therefore not "preserved", whole at least. Daniel Le Couédic Produced for the Exposition Coloniale of 1931, only one other example of this large globe is known to exist (a smaller one, 25 cm in diameter, exists); preserved in the Musée de musée de la faïence de Quimper. The title of this work runs across the equator, on a golden background: "à la gloire des marins explorateurs et colons bretons - partout où le soleil passe, le breton passe" (to the glory of Breton sailors, explorers and settlers - wherever the sun goes, the Breton goes). R.Y. Creston takes advantage of the Colonial Exhibition, a demonstration of imperialist power, to pay tribute to Brittany and its people, who have always been travelers and discoverers. You'll find yourself daydreaming in front of this work, which you'll peruse like a child discovering its first terrestrial globe. This work was later turned into an immense terrestrial globe exhibited in the hall of the Brittany pavilion at the 1937 Universal Exhibition, reaching a height of 3 meters and measuring 1.60 meters in diameter. acquired by Lord Mond and apparently preserved at the Château de Coat-an-Noz in Belle-Isle-en-Terre before being destroyed. Some of its fragments were saved, and are now on display in various museums and institutions. AR SEIZ BREUR CENTENARY SALE 1923-2023
