Joseph SAVINA (1901-1983) - Lot 61
Joseph SAVINA (1901-1983) The Icelander Direct-cut sculpture in patinated solid oak Atelier d'Art Celtique, Tréguier, circa 1930 Titled on the front, signed on the back of the base "J. SAVINA" and the Seiz Breur period monogram of Joseph Savina. Minor wear, cracked wood on back. Height: 46 cm Bibliography : - Pierre Guéguen, "Joseph Savina" in "Bretagne", n° 105, 1932, quotation on page 197. Locus Solus, 2021. Similar model reproduced on page 164. This sculpture is imbued with an almost savage cubism; "geometric as an iceberg"; it echoes the often hostile nature and the hard, thankless trade of these guys of the sea, from the coasts of Trégor and Goëlo, to whom it pays homage: the fishermen of Iceland. A powerful work, carved with gouge and adze, each facet of which reflects the light to such an extent that the slightest movement completely alters its appearance, this "Islander" is a major sculpture by Joseph Savina. This model, produced in limited numbers, is featured on a postcard from the Atelier d'Art Celtique showroom in rue Saint-André, Tréguier, circa 1930, now in the Musée de Bretagne, Rennes.
