Louis GARIN (1888-1959) - Lot 245
Louis GARIN (1888-1959) Vase with women from Ile aux Moines Polychrome glazed stoneware from the Odetta period. Manufacture HB Quimper, circa 1930. Signed on the reverse "HB QUIMPER GARIN 1325" and hand-engraved "g". Height: 30 cm This ovoid vase with its four-handled neck and stylized Ile aux Moines woman design is a classic of the Odetta period. Morbihan plays an important role in Louis Garin's artistic production. He discovered the region on the advice of his friend Octave-Louis Aubert (director of the magazine La Bretagne Touristique) in 1922. Seduced by l'Ile-aux-Moines, he stayed there first in a hotel, then in a rented accommodation, before acquiring a house a few years later, which became the family holiday resort [...]. Born into a modest family, Louis Garin was forced to leave school as soon as he passed his "brevet d'études" to work for his father at the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer. Later, his taste for the arts and his talent for drawing prompted him to attend evening classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. Married with children, he worked during the day but managed to paint in the evenings and on his days off. It wasn't until 1935, when he was commissioned to decorate the church of Sainte-Thérèse in Rennes, that he left his job as a railwayman to devote himself entirely to painting. His career is remarkable for its quality and diversity. In addition to his easel paintings, the artist produced ceramics for the HB factory in Quimper and for the Sarreguemines earthenware works. He also illustrated the magazine La Bretagne Touristique, the newspapers L'Ouest-Eclair and La Vie Rennaise, and numerous books, including Frédéric Le Guyader's famous Chanson du cidre and Tryphina Keranglaz by Anatole Le Braz [...]. His vision is fundamentally optimistic, and his Brittany is alive and shimmering. Bibilography : - G.
