Mirabeau (Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti de) - Pierrugues Chevalier - Lot 59
Mirabeau (Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti de) - Pierrugues Chevalier Erotika Biblion. Edition revised and corrected on the original edition of 1783 and on the edition of the year IIII, with the notes of the edition of 1833 attributed to Chevalier Pierrugues. Bruxelles, chez tous les libraires, 1866. 1 volume in-12, contemporary binding in brown half-chagrin, spine ribbed with gilt fleurons, gilt author and title, gilt head. Used rubbing, spine unstained. Frontispiece portrait of Mirabeau by Flameng XV pp.- 217 pp. 1 f. table. Clean copy, printed on fine paper. The Erotika Biblion, written by Mirabeau during his imprisonment in the Vincennes dungeon, blends erudition with derision, as Mirabeau asserts his conception of jouissance and proposes an astonishingly modern history of morals and sexuality. As erudite as it is licentious, full of allusions and scholarly references to ancient authors, the Encyclopédie, which he plunders to his heart's content, Buffon and Erasmus.... (Jean-Pierre Dubost, Honoré Champion). An unusual work.
