ETHNOGRAPHIC COLLECTION of the INDUSTRY and ART of our conte - Lot 105
ETHNOGRAPHIC COLLECTION of the INDUSTRY and ART of our contemporary Primitives to enable our Collectors to define their Origin, dated 1923.
An astonishing model of a handwritten work in a hardback binding known as "Reliure Electrique ou Instantanée", 32x22 cm format, comprising 260 leaves, 27x20 cm format, followed by a handwritten letter signed by Charles Blin.
Like a model for a book in the making, the collection features pages handwritten in ink or graphite, pages illustrated with multiple graphite drawings, sometimes in color, maps in ink colored with colored pencils, collages of vignettes of reproductions of objects, press clippings or publications, interspersed with blank pages.
In addition to the title page, the collection is divided into chapters titled as follows:
Africa, North America, Central America, South America, Admiralty Islands, Australia, Carolinas Archipelago, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Marquesas Islands, New Caledonia, New Guinea, New Hebrides, New Zealand, Oceania, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Tonga or Friends Archipelago.
Charles Blin, a former railroad employee, built up an important collection of ethnographic and archaeological objects, which he sold in 1927 to Etienne Loppe, then Curator of the Musée de La Rochelle.
His collection began in 1871, when he was assigned to the Arsenal in Algiers, by collecting the weapons of the defeated. He then drew on the advice of specialists such as the Mortillet family and Stephen Chauvet to build up his collection.
From the former Stephen Chauvet collection.
