Complete collection of historical paintings of the French Revolution, in two volumes. The first, containing the first eighty speeches and engravings, from the oath of the national assembly pronounced in the jeu de paume, at Versailles on June 20, 1789.
Le second contenant les discours et gravures suivants, jusqu'et compris le tableau de la paix générale, ainsi que les portraits des personnages qui ont le plus marqué la révolution... imprimé sur papier vélin par Didot l'aîné. Paris, AN VI, 1798.
3 volumes in-folio, later binding (circa 1850) in red half-chagrin with corners, spine ribbed with title, tomaison and gilded decoration in the boxes. Triple gilt fillet framing the marbled paper-covered boards, marbled edges. The binding is solid and in good condition, with some wear and tear on the nerves and corners, leading to discoloration of the leather in places, and a small bump under the headband in volume 1. Volumes collated and complete with text and plates:
Volume I: 9 plates from 1 to 9, then 68 plates from 1 to 68. Some foxing on first few leaves; scattered spotting. Two or three quires uniformly browned.
Volume II: 76 plates from 69 to 144, plates 123 and 123 bis depicting assignats are enhanced in color. Scattered spotting.
Volume III: 67 plates including 1 table of human rights and 66 portraits. Slightly more freckling on the latter volume. The portrait of Lecourbe is missing, but 6 portraits are present and not mentioned in the table: Cambacérès, Lebrun, Talleyrand, Duhesme, Beurnonville, Mac Donald.
The work is quite clean, despite some spotting and minor foxing. Printed on fine paper with very wide margins.
