CHINA, Compagnie des Indes - Lot 235
CHINA, Compagnie des Indes
Large curved commodity basin decorated on the front with the coat of arms of Philip V of Spain surmounted by the royal crown and surrounded by the collar of the Golden Fleece. Floral braid on the rim, and gilded interlacing on the upper rim.
18th century
Height: 15cm; length 52cm; width 30cm
Cracks
The coat of arms has been kindly confirmed by Philippe Palasi.
Philippe V, grandson of Louis XIV, acceded to the Spanish throne in 1700, following the death of Charles II without an heir. As the Spanish Compagnie des Indes did not exist, we can assume that this order was placed through the French Compagnie des Indes. We are aware of a jug in a display case in the Casita del Principe at El Escorial, near Madrid, from the same service, bearing the arms of Philip V (see black and white reproduction).
Cf Porcelaine de la Compagnie des Indes, by Michel Beurdeley, 1962, p90 n°60.
