WAKAS. Kachina cow. She wears boots and a patterned white ki - Lot 277
WAKAS. Kachina cow. She wears boots and a patterned white kilt. Her arms are glued to her body. Painted wood, blue, yellow, black and white polychromy. Height: 24 cm. This Kachina of Zuni origin was described by anthropologist Jesse Walter FEWKES in 1903 while he was in Oraibi, on the First Mesa. A member of the popkot (animal) family. This brown-masked character with horns appears to watch over the herds. He appears at ordinary mixed dances. The Hopi didn't take up animal husbandry until later. Its purpose is of course to encourage herd growth. He appears in dances with deer and antelope kachinam and in mixed dances, holding a rattle, bow and arrow. Arizona. Hopi people. Circa 1910.
