Long war club in the shape of a narrow, rounded paddle calle - Lot 296
Long war club in the shape of a narrow, rounded paddle called a parahua. Several Marquesan warriors are illustrated with these parahuas in hand, in the early to mid-19th century, giving an idea of the man/mace scale. The pommel is carved in the shape of a half-moon. Ironwood - toa (Casuarina equisetifolia), with dry patina (missing and worn). Length: 244.5 cm. Polynesia, Marquesas Islands. 18th/19th century. Collected in the field by Félix Favin Lévêque, Capitaine de vaisseau (1808 1880) either in 1845 or between 1851 and 1855; then collected by the family through descent.
