Okuyi dance mask depicting an idealized female face. The arc - Lot 359
Okuyi dance mask depicting an idealized female face. The arched eyebrows, eyes evoked by narrow slits surrounded by bulging eyelids, short nose and open mouth give this face an impression of serene harmony. Scale-like scarification marks adorn the forehead. The high bun hairstyle is reminiscent of the traditional hairstyles worn by women in this region in the early 20th century. This type of mask, used in mourning ceremonies, evokes the soul of a young girl. In Gabonese beliefs, white is the color of reincarnation. The dancer, hidden by an ample costume, was often mounted on stilts. Light wood painted with white, red, black and blue pigments. Remains of a headdress ornament consisting of three cowries on braided fiber. Height: 30 cm. Gabon. Punu ethnic group. Old label indicating pongwe.
