Henry MOTEL 1786 1859 Marine watchmaker. - Lot 109
Henry MOTEL 1786 1859 Marine watchmaker.
Large marine watch n°87 circa 1826/1827. On the case is engraved "n°87 Henri Motel Horloger de la marine Royale", on the movement "construite par Henri Motel n°87".
Silver-gray dial with painted Roman numerals, Arabic seconds, blued steel hands. Fusee movement, escapement with pivoted trigger. Four-arm compensated balance with four platinum weights and adjusting screws, conical balance-spring. Front winding. On/off device at 6 o'clock.
This large marine watch was handed over to the navy in 1829, at the Toulon depot.
This chronometer was most probably modified and reformed by the navy in the 1950s, removing the cardanic suspension and the balance blocking system. Today, it is housed in a mahogany wooden case with its winding key (cracked front, dents).
Henri Motel's work is strongly influenced by Louis Berthoud. His first chronometers were built on his master's model, although they were designed to be wound from the back. Motel adapted his winding device from the side of the bezel. It wasn't until Nos. 82/85 that he began to break free, and from No. 87 onwards, his own design began in earnest.
