Beautiful old neck-rest featuring two figures lying on their - Lot 176
Beautiful old neck-rest featuring two figures lying on their stomachs, fusing together and leaning on their forearms. The faces are carved in the pure Korwar style: arrow-shaped nose, wide mouth and small eyes. The backs and heads of the figures support the seat. Complex neck rests of this type were reserved for high-ranking individuals, and it is likely that the representation of ancestors enabled communication with the spirits during dreams. Wood with dry patina from age and use. Dimensions 18 x 19 cm. New Guinea-Indonesia. Geelvink Bay. Korwar. Old label and collection numbers in white ink under the base. Former collection of painter Pieter Ouborg (1893-1956), Netherlands. Bruce Frank Gallery, New York. Collection Daniel Vigne, Uzès. Publication: Raymond Corbey, Korwar. Northwest New Guinea Ritual Art According to Missionary Sources. C. Zwartenkot Art Books, Leiden, 2019, fig. 247.
