Cuff, or mwali, made from a large conus shell. These precious objects were both worn as ornaments on the upper arm and used as valuable exchange objects in the famous Kula exchange system studied by Bronislaw Malinowski between 1915 and 1918. Four mother-of-pearl elements are included. Diameter: 8 cm. Melanesia. Papua New Guinea. Massim region. 20th century. Collected by eminent ethnologists during their expedition to the Milne Bay region in 1966.
