Jacques PHILIPPE (1896-1959) & - Lot 194
Jacques PHILIPPE (1896-1959) & Morvan MARCHAL (1900-1963) Armchair with inverted triskel design Solid chestnut, seat in braided leather strips. Rennes, circa 1930 Double signature on left side of seat: Ma(r)chal - Philippe Height 108 cm x Length 55 cm x Depth 49.5 cm This armchair, probably one of the very first of this model and one of only two known to bear the double signature, is the result of a collaboration between cabinetmaker and designer Jacques Philippe and architect Morvan Marchal, creator of the Gwenn Ha Du and probably the originator of the inverted triskel motif carved on the backrest. These two artists collaborated on the decoration of the Saint-Yves chapel at the major seminary in Saint-Brieuc, Morvan Marchal having been involved in the creation of the triskel mosaic decorations on the floor. A similar model is preserved at the Musée de Bretagne in Rennes. We would like to thank Mrs. Manon Six, Mrs. Laurence Prod'homme, Mr. Daniel Le Couëdic and Mr. Philippe Bonnet for their help and valuable information. Consultant : Tangui Le Lonquer
