Large solid carved oak armchair
Caurel, Saint-Guénolé workshop, circa 1905-1910
Wear and patina
Length 67 cm x Height 116 cm x Depth 48 cm
Decorated with an ermine on the center back rail and numerous mistletoe berries, this armchair illustrates the early influence of European design in Brittany, notably Arts & Crafts in the UK, Viennese Secession in Austria and Art Nouveau in France and Belgium.
This artistic openness corresponds to that of the first EMSAV, with the creation of the Union Régionaliste Bretonne in 1898. As such, this armchair marks a milestone in the history of design in Brittany.
Alfred Ely-Monbet and his wife set up the Saint-Guénolé workshop in Caurel in 1906. In 1907, he seized the opportunity
the opportunity offered by a Union Régionaliste Bretonne congress in Rostrenen to exhibit his furniture, objects and sculptures. This was to determine his commitment to the URB, of which he would chair the Fine Arts section. Alfred Ely-Monbet was already working on a new vision of Breton art, through a lightening of forms. Influenced by Art Nouveau, a few years before the creation of the Seiz Breur group, of which he is considered one of the predecessors.
Alfred Ely-Monbet died for France on April 22, 1915 in Langematk near Ypres, Belgium.
