CRESTON René-Yves (1898-1964) - Lot 231
CRESTON René-Yves (1898-1964) Exceptional Seiz Breur bookcase Composed of two disjointed pyramid-shaped pedestals, adorned with a wolf's tooth frieze in stained oak at the base, the panels and door sockets highlighted by a stained oak band. Oak and stained patinated oak panels, plywood shelves. Most probably made by Gaston Sebilleau in Redon, circa 1925. Missing handle, wear and tear, patina and small chips. Unit: Length 53 cm x Height 153 cm x Depth 37 cm Provenance: private collection, Morbihan. With their graphic power, these bookcase pedestals illustrate Creston's ability to transpose to furniture the purity found in his woodcuts and in his work for the Henriot factory in particular: he is, along with Jeanne Malivel, the creative leader of the Seiz Breur. This furniture can be compared with the preparatory study for the Ar Braz library, dated circa 1924-1925, held by the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Saint-Brieuc. Bibliography : Yves Brand'honneur and Pascal Aumasson, Savina Le Corbusier, de l'art celtique à la sculpture moderne , ed. Locus Solus, 2021. The study for the Ar Braz library reproduced on page 66.
