CLASS "M" for "Marblehead - Lot 109
CLASS "M" for "Marblehead
50-inch model yacht. Mahogany hull with ribs. Shaped lead ballast. Monolithic deck in cream lacquered wood (magnificent period cracks!), simulated deck battens. Deck hatch for: a) emptying the boat of water after sailing, b) accessing the carrying handle with the rig set (Mâté). Overhead windvane gear. Sails in varnished and reinforced terylene. Hull length 128 cm, height 195 cm. Circa 1950. Contemporary Ber. Note: The M classes are racing boats whose rules were developed in the USA in 1932. The success of this simple formula was such that it spread rapidly across Europe. Numerous M-class boats were built. As overall length was the only variable taken into account in calculating the measurement, the result was hulls with little or no slenderness. The name of the class comes from Marblehead, a port town in the USA, some 15 km from Boston.
