Flemish school of the 17th century, entourage of Tobias VERH - Lot 186
Flemish school of the 17th century, entourage of Tobias VERHAETCH,1561-1631. At dusk, the flight into Egypt in a mountainous landscape. Oil on copper. Mounted on a horizontal and vertical stretcher. 50 x 62 cm Worn, missing, some scratches and restorations. Somewhere between the ideal and the fantastic, this refined large-format composition illustrates the biblical episode of the Flight into Egypt, where grandiose nature becomes the silent theater of the sacred. Relegated to the background, to the right of the scene, the Holy Family, accompanied by an angel, walks discreetly at the foot of an imposing rocky escarpment, underlining the Flemish tradition of the "landscape with figures", where the sacred narrative is inscribed in the immensity of the natural world. Our painting is distinguished by a skilful construction of space: a winding path guides the eye towards a fortress perched on a promontory, while successive planes of rock, valley and bluish distance create atmospheric depth, reinforcing the poetic, meditative dimension of the subject. Produced in the entourage of Tobias Verhaecht, this painting bears witness to a sensibility still marked by late Mannerism, particularly in the treatment of craggy reliefs and imaginary architectures. The choice of copper as a support, prized in Flemish workshops for its smooth surface and precious rendering, allows for great finesse of execution. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
