SILVER SOUP BOWL AND STAND (800 or lower). Foreign work, pro - Lot 43
SILVER SOUP BOWL AND STAND (800 or lower). Foreign work, probably from POLAND, by silversmith MH, late 18th–early 19th century. The bowl rests on a circular base. Two side handles with contoured edges and beaded decoration, mounted with hinges and a pin. Domed lid topped with an artichoke-shaped knob. Decorated with gadroons (edge of the stand, base, lid, and rim). Coat of arms applied to the lid, the body, and the base of the display stand within a shield surmounted by a crown of a prince of the Holy Roman Empire: “Azure, a knight brandishing a sword, mounted on a galloping horse”; supporters: two knights and their shields, the whole surmounted by a mantling of ermine; motto: Badz co badz [“Be that as it may”]. CZARTORYSKI coat of arms. Letters stamped on the edge of the lid and beneath the base. Hallmarks: 13 / MH / CE (Poland, Kraków office (former Austro-Hungarian hallmarks)) / weevil (import hallmark, Paris 1838–1864). Dents and scratches; slight indentation where the handle was attached to the lid; the handle has likely been replaced (hole); repolished. Height (soup tureen): 24 cm; Diameter (display stand): 35 cm; Total weight: 4289.8 g. Expert: Sophie Vergne
