Adriaen de GRYEFF (1657–1722) - Lot 118
Adriaen de GRYEFF (1657–1722) Pointing Dog in Front of a Wild Duck and a Hunting Trophy Oil on prepared panel (a single board, not inlaid) On the reverse, stenciled mark 731LZ 970DW, old sales label 25 x 42 cm Some wear and restoration Provenance: - Tajan Auction, December 15, 1997, lot no. 94, ill. p. 47 Born into a family of artists, Adriaen de Gryeff received his early training from his father, the still-life painter Jacobus de Claeuw (1623–1694), whose influence profoundly shaped his early career and guided the choice of his first compositions. After several fruitful trips to the Netherlands, he settled for a time in Ghent, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke, then stayed in Antwerp before taking up permanent residence in Brussels, the city where he would spend most of his life. Intended for an aristocratic clientele, his works reflect his father’s artistic legacy while revitalizing the still-life genre through the inclusion of animals and animated scenes. His compositions, blending dogs, game, and poultry into carefully constructed landscapes, demonstrate a personal style that earned him widespread renown. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
