17th-century Flemish School, circle of Tobias VERHAETCH (156 - Lot 128
17th-century Flemish School, circle of Tobias VERHAETCH (1561–1631) At dusk, the Flight into Egypt in a mountainous landscape. Oil on copper (mounted on a frame with horizontal and vertical crossbars) 50 x 62 cm Signs of wear, missing areas, a few scratches, and restorations. Somewhere between the ideal and the fantastical, this refined, large-format composition depicts the biblical episode of the Flight into Egypt, where the majestic natural landscape becomes the silent setting for the sacred. Relegated to the background, on the right side of the scene, the Holy Family, accompanied by an angel, makes its way discreetly at the foot of an imposing rocky escarpment, highlighting the Flemish tradition of the “landscape with figures,” in which the sacred narrative is set within the immensity of the natural world. Our painting is distinguished by a masterful composition of space: a winding path guides the eye toward a fortress perched on a promontory, while successive planes—rocks, valleys, and bluish distances—create an atmospheric depth, reinforcing the poetic and meditative dimension of the subject. Painted in the circle of Tobias Verhaecht, this work reflects a sensibility still marked by late Mannerism, particularly in the rendering of steep terrain and imaginary architecture. The choice of copper as the medium—prized in Flemish workshops for its smooth surface and luxurious finish—allows for great finesse in the execution here. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
