Tuscan School, ca. 1470–1480, circle of Pseudo Pier Francesc - Lot 258
Tuscan School, ca. 1470–1480, circle of Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino The Virgin and Child Surrounded by Six Angels Oil and tempera on panel (with horizontal and vertical battens) and gold highlights Antique panel (trimmed) 52 x 44 cm Signs of wear and restoration Presented in a 19th-century Neo-Gothic frame Frame: 100 x 57 cm This elegant composition reflects the Florentine tradition of the second half of the 15th century, as evidenced by the gentleness of the Virgin and Child, the symmetrical arrangement of the six angels flanking the central group, and the refined use of gold highlights. The delicate modeling of the faces, the silhouettes with their soft contours, and the palette of blues, reds, and golds bring this work close to the style of Pseudo Pier Francesco Fiorentino, who was active in Tuscany in the wake of Benozzo Gozzoli and Fra Angelico’s circle. This panel thus reflects the refined taste of Tuscan painters for Marian images intended for private devotion. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
