Rare folded and painted wooden box. The walls of this box ar - Lot 151
Rare folded and painted wooden box. The walls of this box are folded on four sides from a single plank of wood, the three inner corners of which are fluted and then steam-folded to form the square-shaped container with the single pegged joint. The bottom is similarly pegged on the underside. The painted motifs represent a four-pointed star, a "Salmon Trout" (?) head, and on the other two sides the representation of what appears to be the Sea Bear, a mythological being composed of the head and forebody of a bear and the rear and tail of a whale. This is the coat of arms of the owner, clan or family. Original red cedar wood and polychromy with a beautiful patina of use (now dry) with notable traces of long traditional use dating from before the collection. A painted solid wood replacement lid with shell inlay is included. Dimensions: 55.5 x 43.5 x 43 cm (without lid). Replacement lid: 48 x 47 x 6.5 cm). North America. Canada. British Columbia. Tsimshian or Haida people. Second half of the 19th century. Folded wooden boxes/containers can be used for many purposes, including cooking, storing wet or dry goods, transportation, trading, storing ritual accessories, or as burial boxes. Although the majority are undecorated, some have been painted or intricately carved with motifs in the form of chiefs' and families' coats of arms, or those specific to the clan. Boxes designed to store valuables, as shown here, were decorated with the coat of arms, whose spirit lived inside the box and guarded its contents in the name of the owner.
